THE CORINTHIAN
► History In 1914 Dream, the lord and personification of dreams, was captured by a magician in the waking world and during his imprisonment a handful of dreams and nightmares departed from the dreamscape. The Corinthian was one of their number to take advantage of The Dream King’s captivity, escaping to the real world by means of a young German soldier named Stefan Wasserman. Wasserman’s body became a vessel for the latent soul of The Corinthian. After Charles Constantine refused to kill Wasserman another officer shot Charles first, in the groin, and then Wasserman killing the soldier. Stefan Wasserman’s death, however, was the birth of The Corinthian in the real world. He assumed Wasserman’s identity and developed an interest built on disgust in Constantine who was unable to kill the real Wasserman during the war. The Corinthian spent his early conscious years haunting Constantine, mocking him for not having the balls to kill and goading him to be a man. The Corinthian seemed to quickly associate masculinity and manhood with the ability to do violence and found himself flustered by his inability to do so because he wasn’t designed by Dream to function in that way.

So apart from heckling Constantine and random people at every opportune moment he spent the better part of his early years in the waking world searching for someone who could teach him how to kill. Enter Constantine’s traveling companion, a possibly insane heiress who went by a different name every day in order to recreate herself. The Corinthian took an interest in her after she shot the body inhabited by The Corinthian effectively killing him. Fortunately for The Corinthian he is able to possess other bodies and stole the body of the heiress’ lover who was present for the murder. The heiress realized The Corinthian was a being capable of change, of becoming someone else and the heiress desperately sought to become someone else. The Corinthian and the heiress entered into a pact, if she could teach him “how to kill” then he would teach her how to “stop being you.” The heiress killed many people in an effort to teach The Corinthian how to kill and at first it was hopeless, but eventually he broke free of his programming while at the same time fulfilling the wish of the heiress. He killed the heiress stopping her from being herself and at the same time making his first kill. Constantine walked in on the scene and upon seeing the dead body of his companion, the heiress, he finally plucked up the courage and killed The Corinthian--something that The Corinthian seemed to welcome without resistance. This became the start of The Corinthian’s homicidal career.

Fast-forward to the late 1980s, The Corinthian’s murder spree has had a 40 year (give or take) run. Using his charm and his natural charisma he lured in a number of male victims, removing their eyes and leaving them for dead without so much as a backwards glance. By this time he was drunk on the idea that he was a pioneer living a life free of restraints. It caught up to him eventually as recently The Dream King managed to free himself of his imprisonment and one by one rounded up all of the escapees of the Dreaming. When he finally caught up to The Corinthian, who was attending a convention for serial killers, he uncreated The Corinthian and vowed that his successor would not be “so flawed and petty.”

► Personality The “First” Corinthian is a complex character, just as much so as his successor, The “Second” Corinthian. It’s simple enough to understand what motivates him, why is the question. When he leaves the dreamscape and enters the waking world he is possessed by the desire to kill and with great enthusiasm he seeks out anyone who might be able to teach him how to do this deed. The question is why, something that remains ambiguous. The most likely answer is that he is trying to prove something--whether to himself, his maker, or to humanity--that he can be more than just a dark mirror for humanity. Whatever the reason, as soon as the opportunity presented itself he became a true nightmare, walking around in the waking world and exploiting others with his newfound ability to kill.

The Corinthian has several other key personality traits as well, the most obvious being his level of confidence. His confidence is borderline obnoxious without coming off that way, almost like a very subtle know-it-all. He has no problem taunting others and reminding them of their flaws and of their weaknesses. The Corinthian is smoother than silk as well, he’s very charismatic, possessing the ability to compliment and insult a person in the same breath and he doesn’t bother covering his insults up as well. He believes that there is some sort of cosmic truth in his words and if someone doesn’t like what they hear then that’s too bad. He’s also a bit of a misogynist, while there is no solid proof that he hates women he does find them to be useless (according to his successor).

The Corinthian also has a few quirks, one being his superb memory in which he states he never forgets anything (residues of which he no doubt passed on to The “Second” Corinthian). He also dislikes disruptions, particularly during movie time--he has been known to stab grossly loud movie disruptors in the eye, in broad daylight and without so much as flinching. Needless to say he’s a sadistic and merciless killer who is oddly charming and even friendly to anyone he does or does not intend to kill.

► Other The most prevalent physical trait The Corinthian possesses are his eye-teeth. Instead of eyes he has two fully-functioning mouth sockets each containing a row of menacing teeth. He is also a connoisseur of eyeballs, particularly those of boys, using his mouth sockets to devour the eyes he steals from his victims. Aside from eating them he has the power to see the most recent objects or events beheld by the eyes he’s swiped. He has also shown the ability to take possession of the bodies of others. Once his current body is destroyed he can jump into another and take it over for himself. The Corinthian has other minor abilities as well like super-human strength and a memory that’s a cut above normal. He also carries a knife around with him.
